Latching & Combining

I had 4 weeks of new growth and I wanted to give my roots a rest from latching but I had too many important events coming up. As I latched my new growth I combined several more thinning locks in the middle of my head, so now my lock total is down to 425.

I had so many loose strands all over my head that I used my needle and thread to diligently sew every loose strand back into neighboring locks. It was such a tedious process but I wanted to take care of all of them in one session so that I wouldn't need to do it again later on. This is part of the reason why I can see my scalp now after a fresh latch because there are no stray hairs.

I'm planning on taking my loc count down as well. I'm just shy of 6 mos but I already feel that the ones on the sides are way too thin. After I finish the consultants class in August I plan to take them down a redo. I'm always inspired by your blog. :o)

I've combined at least 10 locs as well. Mostly on the top of my head. There a few more that may have to be combined in future. I really like the size of your locs. I prefer a medium sized loc with strong roots than anorexic looking with a few strands holding on, hence my combining locs.

Yaay you finally did it.

Should I be concerned with threading stray hairs if my locs are not fully locked yet? I only have a few with sealed ends.

@Sereni-T: Do what works best for you now so that later on you won't encounter any issues.

@Anthia-ofo: I totally agree.

@TFL: Normally your consultant is supposed to incorporate any stray hairs, but if your locks are not fully locked and you try to thread your stray hairs, there is a possibility that they could slip out again. It wouldn't hurt to try though.

Whoa! Talk about the patience of Job. I kinda like the look of no scalp showing.

Hi I just recently taught myself how to retighten my own sl's and of course ive made some mistakes (combining locs, messing up a few parts and holes in locs)ive gotten better of course lol I wanted to know if you've had the same or similar mistakes and if they prevent the locs from locing/forming correctly. Also did you take the sl retightning class? Just looking to get diff. opinions. Sorry for the long winded comment. Your locs are very nice.

@Jasmine: Yes, i've made similar mistakes but they never prevented my locs from locking or forming correctly. I never took the class because there wasn't one available for me at the time so I became a DIYer and never looked back.
